Need Something To Do Next Weekend?

Sunday July 20, 2008

If you love pierogi, those heavenly Polish filled dumplings and you haven't made your weekend plans yet, have I got an event for you. Pierogi Fest!

It's a three-day extragavanza held every July in Whiting, Ind. This year it's July 25-27.

It's such a kick! There's every imaginable form of pierogi to nosh on plus fun contests like Eastern Bloc Jeopardy, a parade featuring Mr. Pierogi, the Piroguettes, Miss Paczki, the Precision Lawnmower Drill Team, and the Babushka Brigade.

The festival, in its 14th year, has gained a national reputation and has even been featured in an episode of "American Festivals" on The Food Network, and in Bon Appetit, Saveur and other magazines.

Not into carbs? Then, you'll find the polka is the best exercise ever invented!

I'll bring you a virtual tour of the festival in this blogspot next Sunday.

I love food festivals! My family’s cabin is near New Prague, Minnesota. This year is the 24th Annual Dozinky, a Czech harvest festival. The kolaches I learned to love there are like none I’ve ever found anywhere else. Yum!

Oh how I wish something like this would come to SoCal. My oldest son was practically raised on pierogi’s. When other little kids wanted to devour McNuggets, he just wanted sauteed potato pierogi’s. By age three he was cooking them. My other kids would never eat them and slowly they sort of dropped off our menu. After seeing this I was reminded of these goodies and am inspired to make some just for my son!
