World-Famous Pierogi Fest Was a Blast

Thursday July 31, 2008

Last weekend's 14th annual Pierogi Fest in Whiting, Ind., lived up to its hype.

This Polish groaning board of food, entertainment and just plain wackiness has garnered international acclaim, been featured on The Food Network, in YouTube videos, and was recommended by Oprah Winfrey as one of the nation's top seasonal destinations.

That's a big resume to live up to, but Pierogi Fest delivered. It was three days of nonstop dumpling diving with parade appearances by the Twirling Babushka Brigade, the Czarnina Czicks and the Kapusta Kids.

If you love Eastern European food, you don't want to miss this one next year. The festival is held in July and plans are already in the works for next year. But if that seems too far off, try making pierogi at home with these step-by-step instructions.

If carb loading isn't your thing, there's always the polka!
