Knowing a good thing when they saw one, many Hungarian desserts have been borrowed from the culinary repertoires of Germany and Austria. Bee sting cake is a perfect example.

Legend has it bienenstich was created by 15th-century bakers who, after successfuly fighting off a raid from neighboring villagers by launching beehvies at them, baked a version of this cake in celebration. It was so good, it earned a place in culinary history.

If you love honey, this is definitely the cake for you. It's in the topping, cake and filling. The cake has a darker crumb than normal because of the honey, and the darker the honey you start with, the darker the crumb will end up.

made this for an austrian friend, haven’t heard his reviews yet but it was fun to make even though it was a bit time consuming. I made the mistake of not cooking the filling long enough, still has a bit of the “corn starchy” taste, was still okay but not exceptional, will do better next time. Liked the fact that the filling was not overly sweet with the very sweet cake.
