James Beard Award winner, and uber restaurateur and chef, Gale Gand shared her mother's, Myrna Grossman Gand, recipe with me for Hungarian chicken Paprikash. Myrna Gand probably inherited the recipe from her own mother, Elsie Simon Grossman.
I saw Gale at the recent National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago where she was signing copies of her books, including Gale Gand's Brunch!. After a hug, she looked at me sheepishly and asked, "I owe you a recipe for chicken paprikash, don't I?" It's been nearly a year since I asked her. What a memory!
"We don't use peppers in our (family) recipe. ... I think it was my grandmother's (Elsie Grossman) recipe originally, but my mom made it often so I think of it as hers. I know her sisters Greta and Judy make it too. They were all named after movie stars!" Gand says.
This isn't the first time Gale has given Eastern European Food readers a recipe. Try this one for Hungarian Sweet Cabbage Strudel from her grandmother Elsie.
