So you don't have a Russian deli where you live, but you're dying to recreate some of the flavor memories babushka (grandmother) delighted you with as a child? Well, now you can. I've discovered Deli to You Direct, an online food store that carries more than 4,000 products from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Poland, Bulgaria, Moldova, Austria, Hungary, Italy, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Israel, and Brazil. And probably a few more that I'm not aware of!
Now that Christmas is once again being celebrated in Russia (Orthodox Christmas is Jan. 7), you'll have plenty of time to order the delicacies for an authentic Russian feast. I've sampled several Deli to You Direct products and consider them one of my Eastern European Food Purveyors You Can Trust. Here are some of their products that are among my favorites.
Tkemali -- This Georgian plum sauce, made with tart plums known as tkemalis, is a universal condiment much like ketchup is in the States. It has a delightful sweet-tart-salty taste and is used with fried or grilled meats, poultry, fish, bean and potato dishes and even with pasta. It's become my new go-to sauce!
Pulaski Brand Hunter (Ohotnichy) Sausage -- This skinny smoked sausage is ready to eat and has just the right smoke and garlic flavors. It's delicious cold as a snack or it can be heated. This reminds me of Polish kabanosy.
Smoked Ribs (Koreiyka Pikantnaya) -- Smoked pork spareribs are the building blocks of many Eastern European dishes, including Solyanka Soup and many cabbage dishes including kapusniak. These are very meaty and of superior quality.
Matias Brand Herring Fillets -- These lightly salted pickled herring fillets are packed in vegetable oil and are indispensable for any special occasion in Eastern European, Slavic, Baltic, Nordic, German, and Jewish cuisine. Pickled herring is often served as-is, cut into smaller pieces, or seasoned with sunflower oil and onions, or part of herring salads dressed with mayonnaise.
ALEF Brand Moskovskaya Russian Salami -- This pork-and-beef naturally smoked dry salami is superior. The salami is made using an authentic Russian recipe and traditional techniques. The lack of gristle attests to the high-quality of meat ued in the product. This would be the perfect addition to an appetizer tray.
Gaiser's "Fine (Mother Goose) Meat Spread" -- This pork, chicken liver and veal spread is reminiscent of the liver sausage my grandmother would spread on rye bread and serve to us with hot, sugared tea. It transports me back to busia's kitchen table with every bite.
Delicious Brand Dried Fish "Gold Fish" -- Now here's an interesting product, but authentic as all get-out! Dried fish as hard as potato chips are commonly eaten as a snack with beer in Slavic countries. Try it. You might like it!
