While Jan. 23 is considered National Pie Day in the States, March 14 is celebrated as National Pi(e) Day for lovers of mathematical constants -- Pi -- and for that flaky pastry that's as American as apple ..., well, you get the idea! There's a holiday for everything, isn't there?

To get into the spirit of pie, not Pi, visit the American Pie Council's website for fun activities to do with the kids, and to put in an online bid at the Great American Pie Auction, which benefits Second Harvest Food Bank in Central Florida.

Don't miss the 2012 APC Crisco National Pie Championships and Great American Pie Festival, April 27-29, at the Caribe Royale Hotel and Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. I'll be a judge and promise to bring back lots of great pie recipes.

The National Pie Championships, established in 1995, is four days of seeking the best-tasting pies in the country from amateurs, professionals and commercial pie makers from across the United States and Canada.

A most delicious sidebar to the championships is the Great American Pie Festival where competitors and spectators can enjoy two days of fun -- pie-eating contests, vendor exhibits, baking demonstrations, live entertainment, bake sales to benefit food banks and children's programs, and more.

Have I made you drool yet? Bake a pie today. They're easier than you think!
