Król Stanisław Poniatowski, or more affectionately known as Król Staś (King Stash), reigned during the Golden Age of Warsaw, also known as Poland's Period of Enlightenment, from 1764-95.

Not only to keep a pulse on the happenings in his kingdom, but for the sheer pleasure of it, he held Thursday Dinners. The king invited the nation's glitterati -- poets, artists, musicians, statesmen and other intellectuals -- to these three-hour dinners where ideas were exchanged much like in the famous salons of Paris.

Sumptuous meals were served. I'm wondering if this was a bribe to get the who's who of Poland to come to these events or if the conversation was really that stimulating. Read more about The King's Thursday Dinners and what I think might have been served. No real records remain of the menus.
