Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, celebrates the miracle of the oil central to the story of the menorah's lighting. Hanukkah begins on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev and lasts eight days. In 2013, it will be celebrated Nov. 27-Dec. 5.

During this time, friends and families gather to light the menorah, sing songs, play games and dine. Foods fried in oil are especially conspicuous at this time, but not exclusively. Here are some ideas to get you started. And, if you're looking for a Hanukkah present, try one of the cookbooks I consider to be some of the best.
