Serbian Christmas Eve or badnje vece wouldn't be the same without a hot toddy known as vruca rakija. This potent hot drink is made with caramelized sugar, slivovitz (plum brandy) and water. Every family and church group has its closely guarded recipe. After the traditional Christmas Eve vespers service and Yule log or badnjak burning, a great meatless meal is enjoyed with a sip of vruca rakija. Here is a larger photo of St. Sava church (Merrillville, Ind.) members cooking up a batch of vruca rakija.

Makes 10 servings of Serbian Hot Toddy or Vruca Rakija

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups slivovitz (plum brandy)
  • 3 cups water

Preparation:

  1. In a medium stainless-steel pot, slowly brown sugar, watching constantly. When brown and caramelized but not burned, remove from heat and CAREFULLY add slivovitz and water. Return to heat until it comes to a boil and sugar is completely melted.

  2. Be careful that this does not boil over. It requires constant watching. Serve hot.

I was told as a child that one needs to tie thier pant legs when drinking slivovitz !!! GOOD ADVISE!
