Growing up in a family of 14 children in Martinsburgh, Ohio, Esther Miller helped in the kitchen at an early age. She learned the art of noodle making from her Amish mother, who produced homemade noodles for several local grocers. They did it the old-fashioned way with a rolling pin, knife and sometimes a hand-cranked noodle maker. In 1973, Esther decided to go it alone, but she had her fair share of learning to do.
When she got the hang of it, she marketed her noodles from door to door in her Amish-Mennonite community and to local grocery stores from a wagon she pulled while pregnant and with one daughter in tow.
Now Esther and her husband, Leon Miller, are located in Fredericksburgh, Ohio, where they produce 30 varieties of noodles, including an organic line, under the Mrs. Miller's Homemade Noodles label.
