Not all Polish Christmas trees are studded with blown-glass, crystal and porcelain ornaments. instead, it is usually a mix of a few precious specimens along with beautiful and brightly colored paper ornaments. The tradition of paper ornaments began with peasants, for whom paper and straw or other elements from their agrarian society were most available and affordable. Necessity is the mother of invention and a beautiful art form was born. It is closely related to another -- the Polish art of paper cutting or wycinanki (vee-chee-NON-kee). Additionally, empty, fragile eggshells are used to create harlequin, angel, bird and other ornaments. Check here for step-by-instructions for making a Polish Porcupine.
