This recipe for taco polaco is a Polish-American snack that is a take-off on Mexican tacos. The dish has been around since the 1970s and varies by region and by taste. Despite the rhyming name, polaco is the actual Spanish word for "Polish." This is my version of taco polaco. Substitute as your whim dictates.

Here is a larger photo of taco polaco. Convenience products can be substituted for homemade horseradish and mustard sauce.

Makes 2 Tacos Polaco

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes



  1. If sausage isn't cut into links, divide it into 2 (1/2-pound pieces). If you like your sausage charred on all sides, split it in half but not all the way through. Grill outdoors or on a tabletop grill until hot and sizzling.

  2. Spread mustard down the center of the tortillas. Place 1 grilled sausage piece on top of the mustard. Top with drained kraut, followed by caramelized onions, horseradish with beets and cheese of choice. Enjoy!

Excellent Idea, great taste, Member lkonieczny

I made the Polaco Tacos for Super Bowl Sunday and they were a hit. I took high quality kielbasa, split it and grilled it, put it in a warm soft taco shell, and topped with Polish brown mustard, caramelized onion, drained sauerkrat, and cwikla. I skipped the cheese. These were excellent, all my guests agreed. You could easily do this with a wide variety of toppings. Next time I'll try fresh cabbage and maybe a bit of tomato!
