A sponge ready to be added to a recipe's remaining ingredients.

Definition: Culinary term for a mixture made by combining yeast with some of the flour and liquid used in a raised-dough recipe. When the mixture becomes thick and foamy, it's ready to be incorporated into the rest of the ingredients. A sponge is used when a tangy flavor is desired in the finished product.

I use a sponge in my kolacz recipe.
